Kathmandu Valley

The Kathmandu Valley is located in Nepal. The capital of Nepal is Kathmandu and lies inside the Kathmandu Valley. The valley is made up of the Kathmandu District, Lalitpur District, and Bhaktapur District covering an area of 220 square miles (570 km²). Kathmandu valley has at least 130 important monuments, including several pilgrimage sites for Hindus and Buddhists. There are seven World Heritage Sites within the valley.

The Kathmandu Valley is the most developed and populated place in Nepal. The majority of offices and headquarters are located in the valley, making it the economic hub of Nepal. It is popular with tourists for its unique architecture and rich culture that includes the highest number of jatras (street festivals) in Nepal. The valley itself was referred to as “Nepal Proper” by British historians.

The Newars are the ethnic inhabitants and the creators of the historic civilization of the valley. They are understood to be the descendants of the various ethnic and racial groups that have inhabited and ruled the valley in the two-millennium history of the place.

In 2015, Kathmandu Valley was hit by the April 2015 Nepal earthquake. The earthquake caused thousands of deaths and destruction of many infrastructures. Many of the infrastructures, statues, and sculptures are in the process of reconstruction.

Pokhara valley

Pokhara Valley is the second-largest valley of Nepal. It lies in the hilly region of Nepal. It is in the western part of Nepal. The main cities of Pokhara Valley are Pokhara and Lekhnath. It lies 203 km west of Kathmandu Valley.

The Seti Gandaki flowing through the city from north to south divides the city roughly in two halves with the business area of Chipledunga in the middle, the old town center of Bagar in the north, and the tourist district of Lakeside (Baidam) to the south, all lying on the western side of the river. The gorge through which the river flows is crossed at five places. The floor of the valley is plain, resembling the Terai due to its gravel-like surface, and has a slanted orientation from northwest to southeast. The city is surrounded by hills overlooking the entire valley.

Pokhara is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Nepal. Many tourists visit Pokhara Valley to see the Himalayan range and lakes. The Mt. Machhapuchhre is the major attraction in Pokhara. The mountain looks magnificent when the first ray of sun is reflected on the snow of the mountain. You can rarely take your eyes off from this mesmerizing view.

Pokhara is also famous for boating, hiking, trekking, rafting, and for other extreme sports like bungee jumping, zip flyer, paragliding, etc. According to the Nepal Tourism Board, the number of international tourists to Pokhara only in 2009 was 203,527 out of the 509,956 total international tourists who visited Nepal that particular year, and this number is increasing every year.
